Correcting the record

Don’t you hate it when your Wikipedia page is full of lies? When someone says something about you that isn’t true? So does Chevelle. The band has gone in and corrected some misinformation that was posted online. Drummer Sam Loeffler corrects the band’s Wikipedia information so that when journalists reference that page, which most who talk to the band do, they can get the most accurate information ... well as accurate as the band wants the record to be. Meanwhile singer Pete Loeffler apologizes to fans who find their Twitter page boring when their not on the road. He says tweets are more interesting when the band is touring. Tweets are also more interesting when bands go grocery shopping.

Taylor/Grohl collab

We’re finding more out about the Corey Taylor/Dave Grohl collaboration. It’s not so much a musical collaboration, as bad ass as that is. Grohl is producing a documentary about the Sound City Studios which closed down May 2011. The former Nirvana drummer got his start in that studio, a studio that has seen the likes of everybody from Tom Petty to Nine Inch Nails. Grohl bought the sound board and is apparently asking artists to come back and record through it. Where does Taylor come in? Well, Slipknot recorded their album Iowa at the now shuttered studio. Taylor says he performed a song on the studio’s old board with Grohl and Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen.

A tale of AC/DC in Springfield, Illinois

AC/DC’s 1979 Album Highway to Hell received an advanced preview in Springfield, Illinois after the band stayed at the now infamous Bel Air Motel ... and there’s photographic evidence!

A newly surfaced article posted to the online version of fanzine ümlaut provides some insight into a very detailed account of several kids from St. Louis making it up to Springfield, Illinois, on May 18, 1979 to see their favorite bands AC/DC and UFO. This was way back in the day when Bon Scott was still the front man.

The story’s author says that when the friends got to Springfield they discovered the show was sold out. “Guess this cow town rocked after all,” the author notes. He also talks about waiting outside the Bel Air Motel where they had heard the band was staying. The kids sought AC/DC to get ‘em in the sold out show for free. Sure enough the band came through and not only provided tickets for the show, but also hooked up backstage passes.

As an added bonus—before the show on the bus, the star-struck kids from St. Louis got an advanced listening to the 1979 album Highway to Hell. The album wasn’t due out in the US for another month or so. Since, Highway to Hell has gone platinum seven times. The incredible retelling then goes into some detail about other venues the kids followed the band to with mentions of Mississippi Nights in Sauget, Illinois, and elsewhere.

Cruisin' metal

With everyone on edge about cruising after the Costa Concordia ran a ground listing to the point where it tipped over entirely killing over a dozen people with more still missing—there’s a cruise that scoffs at being scared of anything. That’s the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise. Friday, they just wrapped up a successful four-day cruise where they had forty metal bands perform for 2,000 fans. The sold out journey went from Miami, Florida, to the Cayman Islands and back. Some of the more well known metal bands on the cruise include Cannibal Corpse, Children of Bodom and Exciter. Will there be another metal cruise? Be sure to stay posted to the website 70000tons.com. You can watch a CNN report below:

They're dolls

Just when you thought the market was flooded with enough KISS memorabilia, you’re mistaken. Now there’s some new dolls … ‘er, I mean action figures, out that are being called “retro.” Essentially, they’re the almost exact replicas of some dolls with the likeness of KISS that were popular in the 70s. Once made by Mego Toys, a new company, Figures Toy Company, decided it was time again to bring ‘em back. Now the Mego Toy versions were twelve inch tall. The Figures Toy Company replicas are only eight inch tall, but they have the same “retro” feel. Each figuring comes with a t-shirt ... but it’s a mini t-shirt, so you may not even be able to wear it.

Saturday Session with Bishop

January 28, 2011

Podcast update

  • From the first hour of Saturday Session, Bishop discusses some news focused on Illinois - MP3 Download
  • During hour 2, Bishop talked about media conglomeration - MP3 Download
  • Police state predictions come true is the focus in hour 3 - MP3 Download

Show brief

Greg Bishop hosts Saturday Session from 3 to 7p CST on 970 WMAY, The News and Talk of Springfield. Listen online at www.WMAY.com. Tonight there's focus on Illinois, on media conglomeration, police-state predictions, sounding of the war drums, an overview of eugenics and News on the March. Got something to say? Sound off by calling the show anytime at 217.629.7970 or email: bishop@wmay.com.

Bringing it home

The first amendment gets a win in Springfield as a case involving sidewalk chalk gets thrown out. Springfield public utility City Water Light and Power has proposed a rate increase of up to 9.5%. What led to the need for $19 million? Also some Springfield city workers are adding to the number of unemployed, which adds to the high numbers of unemployed in Illinois. One job that also got slashed from the Springfield area was not within city government but was at the local newspaper--the State Journal-Register. What does that mean to the paper being "local"?

Media conglomeration & censorship

Springfield newspaper is owned by Gatehouse Media. Just who is Gatehouse? There are a handful of major corporations that own the majority of media in this country. You've got your Viacoms, your News Corps, your GE's, your Time Warners, your CBS's ... Get a complete rundown of who owns what with this wonderful resource from Free Press. What about Mid-West Family Broadcasting? Get the scoop tonight with Saturday Session!

War drums

Which came first ... The war or the rhetoric? Some analysts will say that the wars with Iran has already started. You've got the string of assassinations of Iranian scientists, continued sanctions and embargoes against the country and the rhetoric from politicians is thick. Is all of this leading to the inevitable? What can we do to stop it? Discuss the pounding of the war drums with Bishop on 970 WMAY.

Police state predictions

It's difficult to look around and not see what the world is turning into. Every week there are stories about the TSA overreaching (down the pants of a grandma or grandson) or of over-the-skies military exercises in coordination with the LAPD & drones being used for domestic policing, or new cameras with special lights being used as pre-crime fighters, or the FBI wanting to tap the internet ... What does the future look like? Can we logically think through the progression of where the military industrial technocratic police state is taking us? It's a dreary forecast but necessary to understand the implications and devise solutions to protect your rights bestowed upon by your creator.

Eugenics

If there's time, we'll discuss Eugenics. What is it? It's not just Hitler's science anymore ... We'll review some recent examples by way of lab-created super bird flu that seems to be given the green light by elements within the government or the settlements paid out to minorities that were tested on by agencies of the government. Be it through vaccinations, bio-weapons or even genetic modification of our foods, our species is being changed by a very sophisticated science that is working to either kill off the majority of us or blindly following a plan of purification, a foolish and dangerous venture. What's the history of eugenics and where does it stand now?

News on the March

A ton of cocaine sent to UN, well--maybe not a ton--but there was a lot of it ... Is this country turning into a nation of dependents? ... Corpses come to life in South Carolina (to vote) ... Budget deadline missed again (3rd year in a row) ... Obama aides owe hundreds-of-thousands in back taxes ... these are just some of the many stories Saturday Session will rundown for News on the March. Have a story that went under-reported this past week? Call it in at 217.629.7970 or email: bishop@wmay.com.

Car dreams

It’s a little over a week before the “Big Game” and the commercials are starting to come together with some being previewed online. Motley Crue will have some time in the sun as they appear in a 60-second Kia spot featuring a car driving through a couple’s “wildest dreams.” In that dream there will be a mixed martial arts fighter, a Victoria Secret model, a bull rider and footage from a wild Motley Crue concert. The ad will finish with a fairy tale ending. You can see the ad for the Kia Optima Limited with Motley Crue during the first quarter of the “Big Game.”

Almost, brother!

Now this is just really bizarre. There’s a story floating around out there that Hulk Hogan almost joined Metallica. The former pro-wrestler told “The Sun” magazine that he was really good friends with drummer Lars Ulrich. Hogan also said that before being a pro-wrestler he was a session musician. When there was an opening for the band, Lars asked the Hulkster to try out for the band … but Hogan says it didn’t work out. How much truth is there to this story? Unsure. (Have some fun with this Hulk Hogan soundboard) But, there are confirmed stories that some other strange pairings may have taken place like Primus front man and bassist Les Claypool trying out to fill the void. That, of course, didn’t work out either.

They're coming!

It’s official! This year’s Mayhem Festival has been announced and it is going to be brutal as ever. The maggot army will be in full force as the boys get back behind the mask with Slipknot. Also headlining will be Slayer and Anthrax. The 26-date tour kicks off June 30 in San Bernardino, California, snaking throughout the country with a stop in St. Louis at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater July 20th and in Chicago July 21st. The lineup will also include As I Lay Dying, The Devil Wears Prada and Asking Alexandria. Get-off-your-ass pre-sale goes live April 6th. I’d suggest keeping a close eye on RockStarMayhemFest.com for the latest updates.

Old is new

Van Halen is catching some flack for a tune being previewed online. There’s a 90-second clip of a new song called “Blood and Fire” that fans say is not new at all. Apparently the tune is an adaptation from an instrumental song titled “Ripley” written by Eddie Van Halen for the 1984 movie The Wild Life starring Chris Penn. “Ripley” was never released on a soundtrack for the movie, but diehard fans quickly pointed out the similarities. Another new song, “Stay Frosty,” was featured on last night’s episode of CSI.

TV premier

You’ve already heard the new tune “Tattoo” and it has landed really high on the charts. Now Van Halen is ready to release another new song, but they’re planning on having the first airing on the TV, not the radio. The band will debut their new and previously unheard tune “Stay Frosty” on the popular cop drama CSI. You’ll also hear "Tattoo" as well during tonight’s airing on CBS. Check your local listings. Van Halen plan a release of the album A Different Kind of Truth February 7th. It will be the first Van Halen album in 13 years and the first with front man David Lee Roth in 28 years. A tour will kick off February 18th in Kentucky with a stop in St. Louis at the Scottrade Center April 29th.

Album talk

It’s definitely not a throwback. That’s how Soundgarden front man Chris Cornell is describing the forthcoming album, the first for the band in 15 years. Cornell sat down for a video interview with Australian radio and said the band has “always kind of progressed from album to album. So it's definitely not a throwback. It's not [Soundgarden] getting back to [their] roots — it's not that — it's just kind of a natural progression.” The band has been working on the new album for sometime now having entered the studio in March of last year. We’re expecting the new album to come out sometime this year. When? That’s a good question.

St. Louis dates added

Van Halen makes a date with St. Louis. The show was just added by the band for their upcoming spring tour. The St. Louis show will be April 29th at the Scottrade Center. Tickets are on sale Saturday February 4th at 10am through the box office, Ticketmaster.com or by calling 800.745.3000. Also, if you haven’t heard yet, Red Hot Chili Peppers will be taking to the Scottrade Center May 25th. Tickets for that show go on sale this Saturday.

Forthcoming album

Garbage has a new album on the way, the first in seven years, and with it comes a new record label. The band said on their Facebook page that they, like many others out there, have had their fair share “greedy corporate interests,” so they’re birthing their version of a lable called Stunvolume. Garbage producer and drummer is legendary Butch Vig who has produced albums for The Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day, Nirvana and most recently he produced The Foo Fighters’ Wasting Light. Front woman Shirley Manson, who is still hot, is still with the band. Expect the new Garbage album this spring.

Out today

Speaking of new albums ... Don’t forget that Lamb of God’s new album Resolution comes out today! Be sure to pick that up and rock your face off! If you want to sample it before picking it up, the band is streaming the entire album through AOL.

Tony's still rockin'

He ain’t lettin’ caner keep him from rockin’ out some new riffs. Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi is still writing for the forthcoming album ... the first in over 15 years. Iommi was diagnosed with lymphoma not long ago. The band actually packed up shop and moved from LA to the UK where they can be closer to Iommi’s doctors to provide treatment while they work on the album. Iommi said that he just wants to get started with the treatment quick so he can move forward with the Sabbath reunion.

Poor performance

Would it have been better if John Madden had farted it out? That’s what one critic said on Twitter about Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler’s performance of the National Anthem at the NFL playoff game between the Ravens and Patriots. If you recall, Tyler performed America’s theme song at the Indy 500 back in 2010 and replaced the line “home of the brave” with “home of the Indy 500.” That upset a bunch of super-patriotic NASCAR fans. Maybe sports organizers should just isolate Tyler to his role on American Idol.

Rockers and gear

The National Association of Music Merchants convention brought a ton of great gear and rockers to Anehiem, California over the weekend. There’s video of Megadeth’s David Ellefson visiting the Jackson display, RATT guitarist Warren DiMartini talking their most recent release and members of Korn (Feildy & Munky) talking about gadgets at the TC Electronic booth. NAMM is an annual convention for the best names in music gear to show off their latest goods.

Show brief

The first live Saturday Session of 2012 is tonight and there is so much to cover. We'll keep a close eye on the incoming results from the South Carolina Primary, discuss the past two election (Iowa Caucus & New Hampshire Primary), SOPA/PIPA and more. Tune in tonight from 3 to 7p CST on 970 WMAY, The News and Talk of Springfield, online at www.WMAY.com.

Illinois

Several stories on the Illinois front to cover with Saturday Session: videos being destroyed by police a no-no, according to the courts, Chicago's DHS money called into question after waste discovered, Chicago planning for the G-8/NATO summits and the state to close down two state-run facilities transferring patients to community care facilities. We'll go through these and other stories to open the show.

Shaking up the GOP

What a tumultuous week for the Republican Party! Two debates, two candidates drop, results changed in Iowa and a primary today, a scorned ex-wife speaks ... What more could a political junky ask for? We'll go through some of the latest developments and discuss what that means for the rest of the primary season.

South Carolina

Sometime throughout the show, the numbers from the South Carolina primary will begin to trickle in. Who is slated to win? Will there be some trickery or some precincts failing to report as was the case in Iowa? We'll keep a close eye on the numbers being reported to the South Carolina Elections Commission to give you the latest tallies of their presidential preference elections.

Voter fraud

Who would have thought that there would be voter fraud in Iowa? It's a caucus after all and there doesn't seem to be much room for stuffing ballots. But when the numbers were reported at the close of the caucuses weeks ago it was determined that Mitt Romney was the winner with Rick Santorum falling short by just 8 votes. Ron Paul took a third place ticket out of Iowa. Now there are numbers being reported that flipped the first and second positions. How could there be different numbers reported weeks after the initial results were made public? We'll explore the reasons and shed the light on possible vote fraud. Also, a very revealing video out of New Hampshire shows that it is very easy to grab someone else's ballot, even a dead person, and cast a vote. Is it time to start checking ID for voters?

Media Manipulation

It is not a joke, it is not some crazy "conspiracy theory" ... thought, it is a theory ... an agenda-setting theory. Who dictates what is of importance in today's news? Do the people, policy makers or media decide? There's undoubtedly a rich relationship between all three. Sadly, corporate controlled media has a strong understanding about how to sway public opinion and have been doing so for a very long time using recommendations prescribed by author of Propaganda, Edward Bernays. “We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized.” Bernays is considered the father of modern day public relations.

When you consider Bernays tasked the policy makers to "learn how to mold the mind of the voters in conformity with his own ideas of public welfare and public service. The important thing for the statesman of our age is not so much to know how to please the public, but to know how to sway the public" you get a better understanding about how today's media works with the "invisible government" of men whom most have never heard of, you begin to realize that corporate controlled media is constantly working to mold your opinions to match their agenda.

The agenda-setting theory doesn't always work for the team of policy makers/corporate controlled media ... it can be swayed the other way with the public on top. A prime example of that is evident in this week's online protests against SOPA/PIPA.

So much more

Having not been able to rant for all of 2012, Bishop will cover some of the issues that have slipped by like the marines caught on video urinating on dead Taliban fighters, eugenics survivors getting settlement from the government, Chris Hedges on CSPAN and so much more.
