Unauthorized

If you like to read and are also a Metallica fan, you are one in a million. But instead of getting a cookie for your efforts, how about reading a book? A new, unauthorized biography about Metallica front man James Hetfield will be out soon. “James Hetfield: The Wolf at Metallica's Door” will be out April 22nd. Scottish author Mark Eglinton dug deep into Hefield's past, interviewing many key figures who had an impact on young Jimmy. Childhood friends aren't the only people the author interviewed for this unique look into Hetfield's life, fellow rockers take on their associate's life will also be included. Pick up the book to read what members of Anthrax, Alice in Chains, and Pantera have to say about the legendary, yet secretive Metallica front man.

Another new song

A new Deftones album is just around the corner and another new song has been released to stream online. A few weeks ago, the single “Rocket Skates” was released for free download. Then a video was released for the track (view the scintillating video here). Well now there is a new tune out and it just so happens to be the title track, “Diamond Eyes” (listen to the song below). The album, titled “Diamond Eyes,” will be available April 17th. The band had an album already recorded with original bassist Chi Cheng, but the album release was postponed because in 2008 Chi got into a serious car accident that left him in a “minimally conscious” state. So, while the band waits for Chi to come back around to release the new album and tour, Deftones recorded an entirely new album with a new bassist Sergio Vega. Front man Chino Mereno told AOL's Noisecreep that the band almost called it quits after Chi's accident, but they decided to push forward with a fresh batch of songs. To keep up with Chi's progress, visit the website OneLoveforChi.com. To get the latest from the Deftones, visit Deftones.com.

Abrupt ending

In the past, unruly fans would get all upset when a musical act abruptly left the stage. Thankfully this was not the case at the Rams Head Live last night. After three songs deep into a headlining performance in Maryland, Megadeth left the stage. It wasn't because of people blatantly filming the show, something that made Axl Rose was all fussy about down at Riverport in St. Louis a bunch of years back. For Megadeth's show last night, the house public address system (PA) reportedly “took a dump” (though much harsher words were used). Video of Megadeth's front man Dave Mustaine surfaced online showing him coming out on stage, bitching about the house PA. In a recorded phone message from Mustaine, the front man explains how the Baltimore show was doomed from the beginning of the night and that Megadeth would indeed be back in Baltimore. Next time, Mustaine said they would rather play at a gas station with a few generators and their own PA which would work better than the POS PA the band couldn't play through last night.

80s glam rock vs 80s pop

Reporting about celebrity reality television isn't my thing. But, when rock stars are involved, then it becomes music news. Poison's Bret Michaels has been featured in the latest season of Donald Trump's “Celebrity Apprentice” alongside celebrities like Sharron Osbourne, Cindy Lauper, Sinbad and even our very own former Governor Rod Blagojevich. The first project Trump put the celebs up to was running a restaurant with all the profits going to charity. There were two teams. The mens' team was fronted by Michaels, a rock icon from the 80s and a lifelong diabetic, while the womens' team was lead by 80s pop star, Cindy Lauper. So, who won? Well, the $100,000 prize was awarded to Team Michaels who then donated the cash money to the American Diabetes Association. Michaels recently celebrated his 47th birthday and to put even more sugar-free icing on his diabetic cake his latest single “Nothing to Lose” from his solo album “Custom Built” has reached No. 3 on AC radio … but you won't hear that garbage on QLZ … why? Because anything with Miley Cyrus (or Sasquatch Face … as I like to call her) will never make it on The Rock Station.

Streaming samples

It's Tuesday which means there some new stuff to look forward to in the stores. But, if you want to peer into the future—here are a couple of new things to check out online. After 6 years of being apart and 9 years since their last album, Stone Temple Pilots have recorded a new one and controversial front man Scott Weiland said the album is done being mastered. The band even had an exclusive listening party a few weeks ago. Well, now there is an audio sample of the first single to check out online. Granted, it's only 18 seconds long, but it will give you an idea of if whether it's gold or not. With lyrics like “I like it when you talk about love ... You always were my favorite drug even when we used to take drugs,” the first single “Between the Lines” is sure to be a hit. Something new from something old, 80s glam rock group RATT has a new single. You can here it online through Roadrunner Records. The tune “Eat Me Up Alive” will appear on the forthcoming album “Infestation” due out April 20th. Listen to RATT's latest here.

Getting back together

Rumors are rumors, but most times in the music bizz, rumors tend to come true … especially when it's a first person rumor. System of a Down had been rumored a while ago to be getting back together. That still doesn't seem to be happening, but SOAD Drummer John Dolmayan posted on his Facebook page that his and Derik Malakian's side project, Scars on Broadway, will be getting together for an April show in LA. In 2008, after Scars did a brief headlining tour, Malakian announced a cancellation of the tour because his heart just wasn't into touring. So, look out for some updates about Scars on Broadway's show soon. If we can't have SOAD, then a combination of Serj's stuff mixed with some Scars will just have to do.

Going retro

Tribute albums are always a fun time, unless they make you feel old. Metal Hammer out of the UK is lining up an exciting set of albums to celebrate the multi-decade anniversary of Black Sabbath, AC/DC, and Judas Priest albums. Recreations of vintage Sabbath tunes will be performed by Apocalyptica and Prong while the AC/DC tracks will be covered by 80s metal lampoon-ers Steel Panther and Skindred. Judas Priest's classic tunes will be reproduced by Trigger the Bloodshed and White Wizzard. No word yet when these new renditions of classic metal tunes will be out, but just know that it is happening.

From real life to cartoons

Comic book fans, listen up! Rob Zombie is getting back into the land where ink and text bubbles rule. He's mastered the music business, directed Hollywood motion pictures and even taken the lead on network television directing a prime-time crime drama. Now the horror rocker/director is in the process of producing the comic “Whatever Happened to Baron Von Shock?” It won't be your traditional super power driven dark world of misfits and mutants, but rather a depiction of celebrity life, it's seductions, and it's pitfalls. Image Comics' artists Danny Hadiwidjaja and Val Staples have taken up the mantel of this intimidating project. Zombie is on the record saying this will be a very different project. Unlike his past cartoon attempt of “El Superbesto,” Zombie wants to take real life and bring it into the comic world. You should be able to pick up the first issue of the dark dramady subtitled “Sex Drugs and Monster” May 26th. Check out the cover art here.

In focus

The two recent crimes commited by lone individuals who were obviously desperate and deranged has sparked a frenzy from media outlets. It doesn't matter if it is alternative media or mainstream media. The flags of concern have been lifted and what could happen down the road will not be a walk in the park for anybody. Find out what Bishop predicts could happen in the near future if the media continues down the current trend with their coverage of 'Patriot' groups. Here's a hint: "Enemy Belligerent Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010"

Activism

The last hour of Saturday Session (mp3) focused in depth on the events that began the 51 day siege on the Branch Davidians of Waco, TX. Was it because of accusations of child rape or accusations of illegal weapons and drugs or merely a huge publicity stunt gone wrong? You know it's metal when ...

160 people were arrested in Bogota, Columbia Wednesday outside of a Metallica show. The show was sold out and a riot of fans were tearing stuff up trying to get into the venue to enjoy the rock show, but police had another idea. Opening up the water cannons and packs of plastic wrist ties, 1,500 police with tanks and riot gear proceeded to march into the riot. This isn't the first time that a crowd of unruly Metallica fans in some South American country had to be dispersed by the police. The Bogota police chief was mistaken about who the headlining act was, however. He said “The presence of police and riot teams was necessary because these misfits – there's no other name for them – damaged some windows in the surrounding area.” It was a Metallica concert, not a Misfits concert. Geeze! Police in Bogota can be so out of touch with what's in the now. I tell you what, though ... this makes Billy Joel fans look like a bunch of sissies. See raw video from the Associated Press's YouTube channel.

Blind, but can now see

Meanwhile, that quadriplegic AC/DC fan that got his eye impaled at a concert in Australia when his motorized wheel chair went out of control into the mosh pit ...well, he's suing the venue. John Simpson was enjoying the sold out show on a special wheelchair platform on the floor of the venue when his buddy (they call friends mates down under) accidentally hit his wheelchair joy stick and sent his motorized seat into a pit of crazed AC/DC fans. Well, as I'm sure you remember hearing in the news and on Free Beer and Hot Wings, Simpson's medal prod he uses to function things on his wheelchair impaled his ocular cavity and he is now blind. Simpson, now blind, sees money.

Iraqi war metal

These guys make Slayer look a bunch of bitches! They survived the brutality of the Saddam Regime and even witnessed the occupation of foreign troops on their homeland. With IEDs, roadside bombs and firefights surrounding them every day and night, Iraqi natives Acrassicuada found time and wherewithal to practice in dark, humid, and dingy basements. You begin to understand why the middle easterners are ready to make the big time with their unique brand of heavy metal. The band was featured in a very compelling 2007 documentary called “Heavy Metal in Baghdad” which may be available at your video store or you can check it out on Netflix. Well, the band's dream is surely coming true. Their first ever four song EP, titled “Only the Dead See the End of the War” is available streaming online at their MySpace page. The EP was produced by Testament's guitarist Alex Skolnick and the engineer of Lamb of God and System of a Down, Josh Wilbur. The band made it to the states this year to perform a January show at a New York night club. Show your support for metal and get online to buy this EP! Check out the video for "Garden of Stones" on YouTube.

Open auditions

Billy Corgan is holding auditions for a new bassist and keyboardist. Last summer, Corgan worked to find a new drummer and sure as S he found one. He's a bit young, at age 19, but there is no drama with this new guy. I mean, it's unlikely he will get down into a heroin fix at a hotel with the keyboardist like former Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin did. Corgan is taking applications from now to March 31st. If you're interested, get a music resume together along with a bio, photos and a performance video and send it in. Corgan's plans are to finish releasesing track-by-track the remaining 41 tracks from “Teargarden by Kaleidoscope” then hitting up a world-wide tour with an entirely new and fresh Smashing Pumpkins lineup. For more information, check out the press release online.

Open auditions

Dragonforce fans, you are surely going to be upset by this news. At first, it was written off as a rumor. But now it has been confirmed. Roadrunner Records initially had released the story about the departure singer ZP Theart. The reason given by the band for the departure of ZP was creative differences. In other words, the band wasn't clicking as it should have—especially when the band is preparing for a new album. The band released a statement about how the creative core is still grounded with the band and working on the fifth studio album. Now a worldwide search has begun to find a singer for the extreme epic power metal band that will be able to soar with a pure voice and a sword in hand. Get more information about the split and the ongoing auditions online at Dragonforce.com/auditions.

Bringing it to the states

Travel down to Atlanta to catch the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Serj perform July 9th. The Greek Theater in LA will be will put together a symphony for a July 30th performance. Both of these shows follow several other performances Serj is doing of “Elect the Dead Symphony” in Europe. The Symphony debuted in New Zealand last year and has been in demand ever since. Album update and new single streams

The album will simply be called “Slash” and it's the first ever truly solo album from legendary shredder and top hatted rocker, Slash. A digital release of the first single, “By the Sword,” from the album will be available for download March 28th. Currently the single is streaming online through AOL Spinner. “By the Sword” was co-written by Slash and Wolfmother front man Andrew Stockdale, who also lends his vocals to the track.

Listen to the song at Spinner.com

“By the Sword” wasn't originally going to be the first single from the album. “Crucify the Dead” featuring vocals by Ozzy Osbourne was the track that was initially chosen to be the release. Why the change? No, not because “By the Sword” is better, but rather, Ozzy has a new album coming out and there could be confusion about which album any particular single came from. Slash said that because the record is entirely comprised of guest vocalists, it is difficult to get the release of the singles just right so not to confuse or disrupt the artists other material. Since Ozzy has a new album coming out, Slash didn't want to step on the dark prince's toes.

Some of the other guest vocals on Slash's forthcoming solo album include Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas, M. Shadows from Avenged Sevenfold, Kid Rock, Chris Cornell, all-around musician Dave Grohl, Lemmy from Motorhead, and even Iggy Pop. Look for an April 6th release of the album.

So, what about Velvet Revolver? After all, Scott Weiland is done with that project and has gotten back on board with Stone Temple Pilots with a new album just around the corner. Well, with Slash's upcoming tour taking most of his time, he did say afterwords the band will get back together in the search for a new singer.

Two drummers named Joey

A couple of stories about drummers named Joey to pass along to you. It's reported that Aerosmith's drummer, Joey Kramer, sold his house for $2.7 million. The 17-acre South Massachusetts home with a recording studio built in took 19 months to sell on the market for 27% less than the asking price. Someone must have been hard up for cash. Not like that has any significant impact on your life. This next drummer story may, however. Slipknot's skin beater will be taking some time away from the maniacal 9, but only for the summer. It's reported that Joey Jordison will be touring with Rob Zombie for some of the spring and summer months. The story goes that John 5, Zombie's guitarist, called up Joey and asked if he had any recommendations for drummers and Joey jokingly said “Yeah, me!” Jordison will beat the skins for Zombie throughout the Gruesome Twosome tour and part of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival where Zombie will co-headline with Korn.

Concert gets crazy

A bunch of police down in Guatemala fired warning shots in the air and then opened fire with pepper spray and rubber bullets into a crowd of crazy Metallica fans who were trying to bum rush a sold out show. 27,000 people attended the show Friday where Metallica rocked the country. Despite the clash of police and miscreants outside the show and a power problem that caused electricity to cut out during the second song, it's reported that Friday's Metallica show in the Central American country was pretty bad-ass.
