September 17th, 2011 Greg Bishop hosts Saturday Session every Saturday from 3 to 7PM CST on 970 WMAY, The News and Talk of Springfield. Listen live online at WMAY.com. Want to sound off on the air? You can call 217.629.7970 anytime throughout the show. Also, email Bishop@WMAY.com if you want to share something off the air or offer up stories to be discussed! Tonight on the show we'll talk a bit more about 9/11, ten year later. Also today is the US Constitution's birthday and how can we not talk about how the document is in trouble? Don't forget about News on the March towards the end of the show! Support and defend ... Two hundred and twenty four years ago today thirteen colonies, after declaring their independence from Britain, adopted the Constitution of the United States. This was after the Articles of Confederation failed. The standing document paved the way for other countries to follow suit and declare themselves sovereign nations for the people, by the people. Since then there have been many attempts to suspend the Constitution with the Civil War as a prime example of just how that can be done. Today on Saturday Session with Bishop, we'll talk about the founding of the document and where it currently stands. We'll go through some of the articles and see what branch of the government has the power to do what--like declaring war. Also, which amendments (mainly the bill of rights) are threatened? The first amendment's guarantees of the free press, free assembly, religion and speech ... are they safe? What about the second amendment? Can you bear arms in Illinois? The fourth amendment guarantees you to be safe from warrant-less searches. How does the TSA play on that. Also the fifth amendment keep you safe from self-incrimination ... ever heard of "pleading the fifth"? We'll explore if the historic document can survive the test of time (at a time when safety in the face of terrorism is the reason to give up your rights). A little-known anarchist, Lysander Spooner, had some interesting things to say about the US Constitution. We'll evaluate some of his writings as well. (On a somewhat related note ... the US Postal Service is currently threatened with default and Lysander Spooner back in the late 19th century started up The American Letter Mail Company. Did he have that authority?) GOP race The field for the Republican presidential candidate is rather large and not too diverse. There is one candidate that clearly stands out in opposition from the rest on key issues like foreign policy. Is there a campaign targeting Ron Paul to work towards discrediting the long-time congressman from Texas? How has the media tried to marginalize support for Paul and are the recent televised debates just PR for the status quo? China Illinois' Treasurer Dan Rutherford just got back from China not long ago and now Illinois' Governor Pat Quinn is taking a large delegation to the communist country in order to work on trade deals and to get China to invest in Illinois. Is China a friend of the US? Do they have our best interest? Should America be dealing with a country that has the worst human rights record? Tune in and sound off about US-China relations. News on the March Every week we run down a ton of stories that you may have missed, especially if you're only tuned into the mainstream media. Get the latest on the closed-door super committee meeting, the CIA working with police departments, unemployment fraud, the "Jersey Shore" costing tax payer's money, SOLYNDRA and more! Get a rundown of stories (some of which there is not time to cover) by viewing Bishop's Shared Items.
